The Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) and Sahara Asia, Chennai, jointly bring to readers a series of Chinese classics and poetry in Tamil, titled “Creative Classics of China”. The series is a translation by Uma Balu, Director, Sahara Asia, Chennai & Distinguished Member, C3S.
அவர் திடீரென்று காணாமல் போன விஷயம் பற்றி அவர் வசித்து வந்த நகர்ப் பகுதியில் சில காலம் வரை மக்கள் பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். அவருடைய மனைவி அதிர்ச்சியாலும் துக்கத்தாலும் ஏறத்தாழ உயிர்விடும் நிலையில் இருந்தாள். அவருடைய இருப்பிடம் பற்றி அங்குமிங்கும் விசாரித்ததெல்லாம் வீண் முயற்சியானது. காணாமல் போன மனிதர் திரும்பி வரவேயில்லை. ஆகவே அவள் தன் இரண்டு பணிப்பெண்களுடன் மீண்டும் பெற்றோரின் வீட்டிற்கே சென்றுவிட்டாள். அன்று முதல் இரவு பகலாகத் தையல் வேலை செய்து தன்னையும், தன் வயதான தந்தையையும், வீட்டையும் பராமரித்து வந்தாள்.
ஒரு நாள் அவளுடைய பணிப்பெண்களில் மூத்தவள் வீதியில் ஒரு வியாபாரியிடம் நூல்கண்டு வாங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தாள். திடீரென்று அரசாங்க அதிகாரியின் பணியாட்கள் வீதி வழியே அவள் இருந்த திசை நோக்கி வருவது கேட்டது. அவர்கள் உரத்த குரலில் அறிவித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்: “விலகி வழிவிடுங்கள்! விலகி வழிவிடுங்கள்!”
புதிய அதிகாரி அன்று பொறுப்பேற்க இருப்பதாக மக்கள் பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். வாயிற்படியில் சரிந்து நின்றுகொண்டு அந்த ஊர்வலம் கடந்து செல்வதை அவள் வேடிக்கை பார்த்தாள். அது கௌரவமிக்க ஒன்றாக இருந்தது. முன்னால் குதிரை வீரர்கள். அவர்களைத் தொடர்ந்து இரண்டு வரிகளில் வந்த காவல்துறையினரும் அரசாங்க அலுவலர்களும் பதாகைகள், அரசாங்க முத்திரைகள் ஆகியவற்றை ஏந்திச் சென்றார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு மத்தியில் பெருமைபொருந்திய அரசாங்க பீடம் இடம்பெற்றிருந்தது. அதில் புதிய அதிகாரி தமது சிவப்பு அங்கியை அணிந்தவாறு அமர்ந்திருந்தார். அவருக்குப் பின்னால் மேலும் சில அடியாட்கள் நடந்து சென்றார்கள்.
பணிப்பெண்ணுக்குப் பொறி தட்டியது.
சிவப்பு அங்கி அணிந்த அந்த மனிதரின் அழகிய முகத்தை இதற்கு முன் எங்கோ, எப்பொழுதோ பார்த்ததுபோல..
ஊர்வலம் கடந்து சென்ற பின், அவள் மீண்டும் வீட்டிற்குள் சென்றாள்.
விரைவில் அந்தச் சாதாரண சம்பவத்தை அவள் மறந்தே போயிருந்தாள்.
அன்று மாலை எல்லோரும் உறங்கச் சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கும் வேளையில் ஃபெங்கின் வீட்டு வாயிற்கதவில் திடீரென்று யாரோ உரக்க, அதிகார தோரணையில் தட்டுவது கேட்டது. அரசாங்க அதிகாரியின் பணியாட்கள் வெளியே அணிவகுத்து நின்றிருந்தார்கள். உள்ளே அனுமதிக்குமாறு கட்டளையிட்டார்கள்.
“பழைய ஆளுநர் எங்களை அனுப்பிவைத்திருக்கிறார். நாங்கள் ஒரு பெட்டியை ஒப்படைக்கவேண்டியுள்ளது” – அவர்கள் ஒருமித்த குரலில் கூறினார்கள்.
வயதான ஃபெங் ஏதோ காட்டுப்புலி கண்ணெதிரே நிற்பதுபோல் பயந்துபோனார்.
