Abstract:

This paper explores the strategic evolution and growing global significance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since its inception in 1967. Initially established as a regional bloc to promote peace, stability, and economic cooperation among Southeast Asian nations, ASEAN has transformed into a dynamic political and economic force with ambitious goals, including becoming the fourth-largest global economy by 2045. The paper highlights ASEAN’s shift from Cold War-era anti-communist objectives to a focus on regional integration, self-reliance, and multilateral engagement. It examines the role of major partners such as China, whose deepening ties with ASEAN through recent summits and strategic plans have reshaped regional dynamics. Amidst these developments, India, as a comprehensive strategic partner, has a significant opportunity to enhance its role within the bloc. The paper argues that by aligning with ASEAN’s economic vision and principles of mutual cooperation, India can emerge as a vital partner in shaping the future of Indo-Pacific regional architecture.
