Abstract:
China’s future ambitions are reflected in its gigantic industrial complexes that have proliferated since the Reform and Opening Up. These structures are accompanied by the growth of large commercial spaces, symbolizing the government’s ability to turn massive migration into market growth. Since the early 2010s, the simultaneous rise of incomes and investments led to a growth in demand. Noticing the environmental concerns that arose from the production process, the Chinese government institutionally supported and guided the development process with policies. As part of these processes, the automobile sector diversified, and a space for electric vehicles (EVs) formed from the diversification. This study examines the origins of this shift, its background, the role of policy, its relevance for environmental policy in the Indian context, and the way it has shaped the automobile market in China. It aims to underline the shift and thereby conclude with an examination of the Chinese giant in this sector, BYD, through a case study. Conducted under the C3S Winter Internship, the project seeks to describe how government policies in particular played a major role in bringing the EV sector to its current position in China’s evolving economy.
