C3S ISSUE BRIEF 46/26 - Deciphering Sovereignty in Shameless International Relations: Self respect in International Relations Comes with a Price Tag - By Sruthi Sadhasivam.

Interpreting Realism: Shamelessness?
Trump's recent ventures in Venezuela, Greenland and Canada have shaken the international rules based order and pushed the world to revisit the concept of sovereignty rooted in the realist doctrine.
Although the proponents of realism may project realism as “common sense,” it may imply a different kettle of fish in some respects. The anarchical international structure presents a hierarchical world order wherein all state actors behave as per their respective positions in the international system. Some are assertive, some ambiverted and others introverted. However, these are not voluntary choices but rather bestowed on each actor based on their respective international positions and change as their positions in the international system changes. Realism is in fact “shamelessness in incarnation” that countries at a disadvantage are forced to embrace visavis their counterparts having left with no choice. However, this is simply one dimension of realism or can be perceived as an outcome of realist international relations. Whatever be it, in essence, it tends to threaten the personal sovereignty of States.
