China’s Maritime Silk Road (MSR) is a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) designed to enhance global maritime trade connectivity through infrastructure, investments, and partnerships. It serves to secure China’s economic interests of diversifying and securing sea lines of communication, expanding access to overseas markets and building resilient supply chains for raw materials and resources. The MSR is also a platform for power projection via China’s armed forces, specifically the People’s Liberations Army-Navy (PLAN). As a result, the defence and military implications of the MSR have raised security concerns across Asia and the West. The economic and technological competition between China and the USA, Japan and India, along with strategic rivalry unfolding in the Indo-Pacific, has created a dynamic and networked environment in the maritime domain.
